Year 8

Rational Tangles

Students learn a "dance" with ropes that can be used to generate any rational number. They investigate and justify the properties of this "dance".

This is a classic reSolve sequence aligned with the Australian Curriculum V8.4. It is only available as a downloadable package.

Students are introduced to a "dance" with ropes that uses two different moves to produce a variety of different tangles. Each unique tangle represents a different rational number. Students are challenged to experiment with creating different tangles and to explain what mathematical operations are being represented by each move.

This sequence is for students who:

  • are familiar with the concept of "rational numbers"
  • can add and subtract fractions

Lesson 1: Untangling Tangles

Students learn a "dance" with ropes that can be used to form any rational number. They experiment with the "dance" to determine its properties.
