Assessing Mathematical Reasoning

These resources assist primary teachers in encouraging reasoning in their students and in conducting formative assessment of this Australian Curriculum: Mathematics proficiency. The resources include both professional learning and classroom materials.

Bringing the Real World into Algebra

Students analyse digital images and data from hands-on activities algebraically to solve real world problems and to appreciate the purpose of algebra. They explore functions through visual, physical, graphical and symbolic representations.

Mathematical Inquiry into Authentic Problems

Ten inquiry units based around authentic real world situations. The aim is that students learn to use mathematics to help make sensible decisions, in response to the ill-structured and open-ended questions that are often encountered in life.

Mathematical Modelling

Five units introducing students to mathematical modelling. Students formulate problems mathematically and interpret the mathematical results to make practical decisions, then communicate the reasons for their decisions clearly to others.

Mechanical Linkages and Deductive Geometry

Sets of hinged rods create the motion of many everyday objects such as car jacks and folding umbrellas. These lessons investigate the underlying geometry of triangles and parallelograms, with physical models and dynamic geometry software and proof.

Modelling Motion

An inquiry-based unit on modelling various motions such as rolling balls, falling objects, and from some Olympics events. Students will experience the power of mathematics in STEM and build mathematical modelling skills.

The Bar Model Method

The ‘bar model method’ is a pedagogical strategy to help students solve word problems. It offers an efficient and effective problem-solving tool for use across many topics in mathematics, and promotes visualisation of mathematical structures.
