Topics

The reSolve learning progressions provide learning goals and assessment indicators for selected mathematics topics.
Each progression is accompanied by a supporting document, What You Need to Know. This document presents important considerations when teaching these topics, including key understandings, common misconceptions and representations that should be used to support students' understanding.
The progressions have been used by the reSolve team to develop teaching resources that build progressive understanding through tasks that encourage a spirit of inquiry.

Proportional Reasoning

The Proportional Reasoning learning progression was developed in consultation with Professor Shelley Dole from the University of Southern Queensland, Associate Professor Rhonda Faragher, Dr Geoff Hilton and Dr Jodie Miller from the University of Queensland, and Associate Professor Annette Hilton from the University of Technology, Sydney. The document contains:

  • the Substantial Mathematical Ideas for proportional reasoning

Fractions

The Fractions learning progression was developed in consultation with Associate Professor Jenni Way from the University of Sydney and Michelle Tregoning from the New South Wales Department of Education. The document contains:

  • a learning progression for Years F-8
  • an overview of different fraction constructs
  • the Substantial Mathematical Ideas for fractions
  • common misconceptions
  • models for fractions
  • useful resources

Statistical Variation

The Statistical Variation learning progression was developed in consultation with Professor Emerita Jane Watson and Adjunct Associate Professor Rosemary Callingham from the University of Tasmania and Associate Professor Noleine Fitzallen from La Trobe University. The document contains:

  • a learning progression for Years F-10
  • an overview of variation in statistics, why it matters and how it can be highlighted
  • common misconceptions
  • useful resources
